Coalition Goals
Potential Actions
The Abilene Big Country Hunger Coalition hopes to combine the strengths of the various nonprofits, schools, religious organizations, and community members involved to come up with creative solutions to the problem of food insecurity in the Big Country. This means taking action to address gaps and barriers to service. An example of this is our Summer Meals Program, which aims to address the three-week gap in the summer during which the schools are unable to provide meals.
In this post, we will outline some of the other potential actions the Coalition could take in order to improve access to services in the Big Country.
Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program
This program would provide vouchers to seniors to use at the local farmers markets during the summer.
Mobile Food Pantry
This program would allow a greater reach for the local food pantries in the Big Country, by using a refrigerated vehicle to distribute food to neighborhoods that may have inconsistent access to transportation.
Meal Prep and Delivery
This program would allow fresh meals to be directly delivered to neighbors who may have mobility issues, little/no access to kitchens, or an inability to cook for themselves.
Awareness Outreach Initiative
This program would allow the Coalition to fight the negative stigma associated with asking for help, and also help provide easily-accessible information on available services in the Big Country.
Signup Assistance
This program would encourage local college students in the field of social work to volunteer with the Coalition to help neighbors sign up for assistance programs such as SNAP, WIC, TANF, housing, IDs, and more.
Can you think of any other potential actions the Coalition could take? Would you or your organization like to get involved to make some of these ideas a reality? Please don’t hesitate to reach out and get involved, we’d love to have you!
