“Hunger is not an issue of charity. It is an issue of justice.

— Jacques Diouf

Hunger in the Big Country is a problem.

We can solve it.

By working collaboratively, our coalition of nonprofits, religious organizations, schools, governmental organizations, and community members aims to address food insecurity in the Abilene Big Country area. We exist to streamline access to services and come up with comprehensive solutions to the barriers some may face in accessing these services.

Taylor County Statistics

ALICE in Taylor County

The ALICE Report is put together by United for ALICE, and gives detailed information about resource restrictions at the county level. According to their website, “ALICE workers educate our children, keep us healthy, and make our quality of life possible, yet do not earn enough to support their own families. ALICE households are forced to make tough choices, such as deciding between quality child care or paying the rent, which have long-term consequences not only for ALICE, but for all.” Click the graphic for more information.

Cost of Living in Taylor County

This information was gathered using the ALICE Report Household Budgets tool. It shows the cost of living (including housing, childcare, medical care, food, transportation, taxes, and more) at the county level. The data differentiates between a survival budget- “the minimal estimate of the total cost of household essentials”- and a stability budget, which includes additional savings for things like emergencies, higher education, and home buying. Unfortunately, over half of Taylor County residents who are eligible for SNAP benefits are not receiving the assistance they need. For an individual, the monthly income limit is $1,755. For a family of four, the monthly income limit is $3,603. The Abilene Big Country Hunger Coalition aims to get folks connected to the benefits they are entitled to.
